Alexa Schmitz, an inaugural winner of the Rising Women Innovator Awardn from Cornell Technology Licensing, is developing environmentally sustainable techniques to extract rare earth elements from rocks and other solid substrates using microbes. She is a co-founder of REEgen, a company that is re-envisioning the global rare earth supply by replacing the most harmful production steps with clean microbial processes.
